Eikonal surface wave tomography with smoothing splines—application to Southern California

چکیده

SUMMARY The densification of both permanent and temporary seismic networks has raised new interest in surface wave eikonal tomography from which phase velocity maps can be obtained without resolving a tomographic inverse problem. However, requires to reconstruct traveltime surfaces discrete number measurements at the station locations, challenging. We present method these with smoothing splines discretized regular 2-D Cartesian grid. impose Neumann boundary conditions so that gradients on edges grid are equal apparent slownesses average plane along normal direction measured by beamforming. Surface wave tomography from microseisms in Southern California

[1] Since it has already been demonstrated that point-topoint seismic propagation Green Functions can be extracted from seismic noise, it should be possible to image Earth structure using the ambient noise field. Seismic noise data from 148 broadband seismic stations in Southern California were used to extract the surface wave arrival-times between all station pairs in the network. The seismic ...

Eikonal tomography: surface wave tomography by phase front tracking across a regional broad-band seismic array

We present a new method of surface wave tomography based on applying the Eikonal equation to observed phase travel time surfaces computed from seismic ambient noise. The source-receiver reciprocity in the ambient noise method implies that each station can be considered to be an effective source and the phase travel time between that source and all other stations is used to track the phase front...

Surface Wave Path Corrections and Source Inversions in Southern California

The cut-and-paste (CAP) method for retrieving earthquake source parameters has proven useful in many regions. Since CAP breaks three-component data into Pnl and surface wave segments and models them separately, imperfect 1D Green’s functions can be effectively used to model the records and determine source parameters. The resultant time shifts for different segments, for example, Pnl or surface...

Adjoint tomography of the southern California crust.

Using an inversion strategy based on adjoint methods, we developed a three-dimensional seismological model of the southern California crust. The resulting model involved 16 tomographic iterations, which required 6800 wavefield simulations and a total of 0.8 million central processing unit hours. The new crustal model reveals strong heterogeneity, including local changes of +/-30% with respect t...

The morning glory wave of southern California

[1] A pulse-like disturbance traveling across the Los Angeles basin was observed on 12 October 2001 with seismographs of the TriNet network. This wave had a period of about 1000 s and a propagation speed of about 10 m/s, much slower than seismic waves. The seismograph data were compared with barograph data, and a good correlation was found so the wave was determined to be atmospheric in origin....
